Our employees exhibited a pavilion and presented papers at IASS 2023 (International Association of Shell Space Structures: held in Melbourne, Australia).
MHI has been focusing on research and development activities in the exterior domain from the viewpoint of facade engineering.
With the aim of widely disseminating our research results to society, we are actively publicizing our research results by presenting them at conferences of the Architectural Institute of Japan and submitting them to the Technical Report Collection of the Architectural Institute of Japan.
Title of paper: Construction of Developable Freeform Membrane Tensegrity Structures
Authors: Yuta Shimoda, Mori Hayashi, Hiroki Awaji (AGB), Taichi Nakamura, Yoto Kamijo, Tomoyuki Gondo, Tomohiro Tachi, Jun Sato

This pavilion was designed and built in collaboration with the University of Tokyo and Taiyo Kogyo, and we were in charge of designing the 3D printed joints using the generative design method.
▼What is generative design?
Generative design is a design method that reduces the design cost and weight of complex shapes by inputting load conditions for a member and having a computer automatically generate a shape that optimizes the mass and rigidity of the member while satisfying those load conditions.
▼What is IASS (International Association of Shell and Spatial Structures)?
International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures (IASS) symposia annually bring together hundreds of participants from around the world to exchange ideas on the latest ideas and exciting developments in the field and to network with other professionals.
IASS symposia have been held for more than 60 years in countries as diverse as Brazil, China, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, Korea, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
The theme of the IASS 2023 symposium is the integration of design and manufacturing, which is becoming increasingly important with the development of digital technology in both the design and manufacturing sectors. The symposium covered all aspects of materials, design, calculation, construction, maintenance, history, environmental impact, and sustainability of shell and space structures.
