The “Wood SSG Construction Method” examined in this study is a system that replaces the aluminum support members used in conventional SSG construction methods with wood, and bonds the glass and wood together using structural sealant.
By preventing the wood from being directly exposed to the outdoors, we aim to achieve a balance between a design that makes full use of wood and durability. In addition to improved thermal insulation and reduced environmental impact during manufacturing—achieved by avoiding the use of aluminum—this approach also allows for the creation of custom shapes through CNC machining.
In this study, we evaluated the adhesion performance of various combinations of tree species, primers, and coatings after accelerated aging and identified specifications that are expected to provide long-term reliability.
In addition, we conducted wind pressure cyclic loading tests using full-scale wooden SSG units and fabricated full-scale mockups in arch and circular shapes, and obtained favorable results not only in terms of performance but also in terms of manufacturability and constructability.

In Japan, the standards and warranty systems required to apply the Wood SSG construction method to actual projects have not yet been fully established. By presenting our research findings at an international conference specializing in architectural glass and publishing them as a paper, we aim to enhance the technical and academic credibility of the Wood SSG construction method and promote its widespread adoption in the future.
Moving forward, AGB will continue to develop new facade technologies that balance the reduction of environmental impact with the expansion of architectural expression, by integrating the expertise in facade engineering we have cultivated through practical experience with our research activities.
